What is an Assisted Stretch Treatment and PNF: Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation?
Assisted Stretch Treatment and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) is a more advanced form of flexibility training, which involves both the stretching and contracting of the muscle group being targeted. PNF stretching is one of the most effective forms of stretching for improving flexibility and increasing range of motion.
What is an example of PNF stretching?
A common PNF technique is the contract-relax stretch. This is sometimes called isotonic stretching. For example, in a hamstring stretch, this could mean a trainer provides resistance as an athlete contracts the muscle and pushes the leg down to the floor.
An example sequence could look like this:
Lie on your back with one leg extended toward the ceiling.
Stretch: Have your partner move your leg into a static stretch by pressing it gently toward your face. Hold the static stretch for about 10 seconds.
Contract: Contract the hamstring muscles and push your leg against your partner’s hand while your partner resists the movement. Hold the contraction for about 5 to 10 seconds.
Stretch: Relax the muscles and allow your partner to carefully move the leg past its normal range of movement. Hold this passive, static stretch for about 20 to 30 seconds.
Rest for 30 seconds and then repeat the procedure two to three more times.
What does an assisted stretch and PNF session look like? Personal Assessment The first step is a movement assessment on your initial visit, Melissa will provide you with a professional movement assessment designed specifically for your needs and create a corrective Assisted Stretch/PNF session for you. Personalization behind every stretch customizes each and every stretch for your specific body and needs.
Warming Up Next, Melissa will guide her clients into gentle warm-ups that are done independently and also done with assisted stretch and PNF techniques. Melissa also uses a massage device to help improve blood flow and circulation before the session begins. Sessions should never begin without doing a short warm-up sequence.
Stretch Therapy Activation After your initial assessment, Melissa will begin to help you repair, restore, and recover. You’ll get a deep stretch focused on your key tension areas.
